Getting started · Chapter 3
Creating versions.
A version is one edition of the same title, such as Full HD and 4K. Without a version no movie can be added, because nexcrate has to know what to look for. This chapter creates the versions. What they are good for and why they need no second instance is on the Versions page.
What makes a version
The version is part of the title, not a program of its own. Each one has its own profile, its own default folder and, if you like, its own naming. On every title nexcrate shows the state of each version: “Available”, “Wanted”, “Downloading”, “Upgrade possible” or “Not monitored”.
Creating a version
- Open the page
Open “Settings › Versions”. At the top are “Movies”, “Shows” and “Music”. Choose the type you want to create a version for.
- Choose “Add version”
The dashed tile with the plus opens the window “Add version”.
- Give it a name
Under “Name” enter what the version should be, such as “Full HD” or “4K”. Each name exists only once per type. “Save” creates the version.
Every version stands there as a tile, with its name, the number of its titles and the buttons “Rename” and “Remove”. Below sit the row for the profile and the row “Protocol and waiting time”.
Good to knowStart small. One version per type is enough to begin with. You can add a second one, such as 4K, whenever you like and then switch it on for single titles. You add further versions later on the title's page.
A new version does not download anything yet. Two things are missing, and nexcrate tells you if you forget. Without a profile it cannot judge any release (“No profile yet”). Without a default folder it does not know where the files should go (“Without one this version downloads nothing”). Both follow in the next two chapters.
Versions for series
Series have versions of their own, apart from those of the movies. Creating them works the same way: tab “Shows”, “Add version”, name. When you add a series, you decide for each version which episodes it monitors. The chapter Series describes that.
Music has one version
You do not create a version for music. It appears by itself as soon as you add the first artist, the first album or a Lidarr connection. There is no renaming or removing it. That is a limit of nexcrate: an album does not exist as FLAC and as MP3 at the same time. What you can set under “Versions › Music” is in the chapter Music.
Renaming and removing
“Rename” changes the name of the version. “Remove” asks first and only works while no title and no Radarr connection uses the version any more. If a title still hangs on it, nexcrate says so.
Protocol and waiting time
Every tile has the row “Protocol and waiting time” with the button “Change”. Radarr, Sonarr and Lidarr call this a delay profile. It sets two things: which protocol wins between releases that are otherwise equal, and how long automatic search waits to see whether a better release turns up. Out of the box it is the same as there: Usenet wins, nothing waits.
- Preferred protocol. It only decides between releases of equal quality and equal score. A better release always wins, wherever it comes from.
- “Use Usenet” and “Use torrents”. A protocol that is switched off does not fit this version. At least one has to stay on.
- “Usenet waiting time (minutes)” and “Torrent waiting time (minutes)”. The time is counted from when the indexer published the release. 0 means load at once, and the maximum is 30 days.
- Exceptions. “Load the best quality at once” lets a release in the best quality the profile allows skip the wait. “Load at once from a certain score” does the same for releases whose score reaches a threshold.
Only automatic search waits. Whoever presses “Download” or “Search automatically now” gets the release at once. What is waiting right now is listed under “Downloads” in the tab “Waiting”. If you have a connection to Radarr, Sonarr or Lidarr, you can fetch its delay profile: the window has “Read from a connection” with the button “Read”. It is only saved with “Save”.
Next comes the profile that tells each version which releases it takes: Profiles.
