Day to day · Chapter 13
Discover and the calendar.
“Discover” shows you titles that are not in your library yet, and the “Calendar” shows what comes out in the next weeks. Both only read until you add something. If you run a request page such as Nexview in front of nexcrate, you may never need Discover. For everyone else it is the place to find new movies, series and albums.
Discover
You find “Discover” in the bar at the top. At the top you pick the kind (“Movies”, “Series” or “Music”), below it the list. Each list shows at most twenty titles that are not in your library. Under the name of each list one sentence says what it is sorted by.
- Movies: “New to get” (out on digital or disc in the last four months), “Popular now”, “New and acclaimed” (out in the last year, at least 200 votes) and “Classics” (before 1996, at least 1,000 votes). Only what is already out on digital or disc appears, because nobody can download what is only in cinemas.
- Series: “New series”, “Popular now”, “Finished and good” and “Classics” (started before 2010). News, talk, reality and soaps are left out of the popular ones.
- Music: “New releases”, “Played a lot now” and “Classics”. They come from ListenBrainz, MusicBrainz's open listening record.
Movies and series come from TMDB, so you need the token from TMDB. For music you switch on ListenBrainz, either right on the page with “Switch on ListenBrainz” or under “Settings › Online services”. It is off by default. nexcrate only fetches the lists of the most played albums there, without a key and without telling anything about your library.
Filtering, adding, hiding
- Filter
Above the list there are drop-downs. For movies “Released in” narrows by country, with the country of your TMDB language at the top of the choice. “Genre” and “Original language” exist for movies and series, “Country of origin” for series. For “Classics” no country counts, because classics are out everywhere.
- Add
A click on a card opens the add dialog, just as in the library: you choose the versions and, for series, what they monitor. Afterwards the title is in the library and you stay on the page. The list fills up again.
- Hide
The small button at the top right of the card is called “Not interested”. It hides the title for good. On a computer it appears when you point at the card, on a phone it is always there.
- Bring back
At the bottom of the page it says how many titles you have hidden. “Show all again” brings them back.
If a list is empty, the page says there is nothing you are missing right now. Try another list or fewer filters. When TMDB has no more for your choice, the page says that too.
The calendar
The “Calendar” shows when a movie comes out, an episode airs and an album is released. At the top you switch between “Month” and “List”. The list shows the next days from today, the month lets you page forward and back.
- Kind: “Movies”, “Episodes” and “Albums” can be shown or hidden one by one.
- “Watched only” shows only what nexcrate watches for you.
- Occasion: For movies it says whether it is “In cinemas”, the digital date (“Digital”) or the release on disc (“Disc”). Episodes carry “Airs”, albums “Released”.
- “Region” decides whose date counts: “Earliest date anywhere” or the date of one particular country. A movie is seldom out everywhere on the same day.
Getting the calendar into your calendar app
On the “Calendar” page there is “Subscribe to the calendar”. It is an address that a calendar app reads without logging in, so Apple Calendar, Thunderbird or any other app can show the dates next to your own.
- “Turn the subscription on”
The subscription is off by default, and while it is off the address answers nobody.
- Copy the address
“Copy the address” puts it on the clipboard. Paste it into your calendar app as a subscription.
- Make a new key if needed
The address carries a key of its own that opens this calendar and nothing else. “New key” invalidates the old one. Every calendar app holding the old address then gets nothing.
Good to knowWhoever has the address sees this calendar. Only pass it on when you want that. If it has fallen into the wrong hands, “New key” is enough.
